Are you passionate about making a difference to the lives of children? Do you want to inspire the next generation and help children reach their full potential?
Being a primary school teacher can be immensely rewarding. You get to work with children when they are at their most inquisitive and open minded and it allows you to directly impact the lives of young people. These impacts that can last a lifetime.
Our Primary Initial Teacher Training Courses are designed to prepare you for a career in teaching, giving you the skills and knowledge to ensure that every child has the best possible start in life, regardless of their background and circumstances.
You can choose from four Primary courses – Primary 3-7, Primary 5-11 , Primary 5-11 with PE, Primary 5 – 11 with Maths and Primary 5-11 with SEND.
Your one-year SCITT course is made up of three elements - School-based training, Inspiring Leaders centre-based training, and University-based training. This careful blend of practice and theory ensures that you gain the knowledge you need to have a deep understanding of how children learn, and the opportunity to put different teaching techniques in to practice. Hand-in-hand with your school experience you will receive training from our friendly and supportive teaching specialists, who understand the journey you are on and will help you develop the skills and knowledge needed to be the best teacher you can be.
Our school-based teacher training allows you to be immersed, in all aspects of school life, from the moment you arrive on the course.
You will be introduced to your host school before meeting the children, allowing you time to build positive and important relationships with key members of staff who will support you throughout your teacher training year.
From the moment you enter school on the first day, you will be treated as a member of the staffing team, allowing you to build strong relationships with those in your class and around school. Through the support offered from your Class Mentor and Learning Coach, you will gradually take on additional responsibilities and be given more freedom to explore and apply your creativity.
As you become more confident and independent in your teaching, you will begin to experience the gratification and the joy that comes from children learning what you have taught them.
Our taught programme will leave you inspired by some of the most passionate, expert teachers in our partnership of schools. The majority of our facilitators are Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs). They are teachers and leaders who have been recongnised by the government for their expertise and specialist knowledge and are also currently practising in the classroom on a daily basis. Being taught by current practitioners will allow you to learn from those who can give you the most up to date information and strategies in teaching and learning.
We pride ourselves in providing you with the opportunity to learn from and be enthused by some of the most exceptional professionals in their fields.
We work with the University of Derby, a university highly regarded for its strong initial teacher training provision. Whilst the university is responsible for delivering and accrediting the Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE), we work closely with the university to ensure trainees are being provided with the best possible training so that the information provided can be transferred into their own classroom practice.
As a member of the university, the trainee will also be entitled to access their resources, such as the library, trainee services and student benefits. The university will provide the trainee with an induction into the services available at the start of the course. In addition, the University will support trainees by providing input on academic research and writing to help with completing an assignment at the end of each module.
During the course you will spend some time independently researching and studying current and relevant research to support their teaching practice, just like a fully qualified teacher.
We want you to be naturally curious and seek to constantly improve your performance through personal research and study.
