Exploring a decade of technological innovation in education
As we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of our first cohort’s graduation, we are taking the opportunity to reflect on the key developments that have shaped education over the past decade.
This blog is the first in a series exploring the evolution of classroom innovation, teacher training, and the changing role of technology in schools since 2015.
The evolution of classroom technology
In 2015, technology in UK classrooms was primarily centred around interactive whiteboards, projectors, and the initial adoption of tablets. However, challenges remained in fully embedding technology into classrooms. Many teachers felt they lacked the necessary training and confidence to integrate digital tools effectively, meaning that available resources were not always used to their full potential. Without structured support, technology was sometimes seen as an add-on rather than an essential part of teaching and learning.
The impact of COVID-19 on education and the role of technology
The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to education in the UK, forcing schools to rapidly adapt to remote learning during nationwide lockdowns. With classrooms closed, technology became the backbone of lesson delivery. Teachers had to quickly develop new digital skills to engage students remotely, while pupils and parents had to adjust to learning from home. The pandemic highlighted the digital divide, with some students struggling to access online lessons due to a lack of devices or internet connectivity. However, it also accelerated the adoption of educational technology, demonstrating its potential to support flexible and accessible learning. The experience reinforced the importance of digital literacy for both teachers and students, ensuring that schools are now better prepared to integrate technology into everyday teaching.
Current innovations in UK classrooms and use of AI
Today’s UK classrooms are dynamic environments where technology and innovative teaching methods converge to create enriched learning experiences. The integration of technology has enabled more personalised and efficient learning journeys, allowing teachers to focus on developing critical thinking and creativity among students. However, alongside technological advancements, there is a growing recognition of the need to balance digital learning with traditional teaching methods.
AI is playing an increasingly prominent role in UK schools, offering both opportunities and challenges. On the positive side, AI-driven platforms personalise learning, helping teachers to tailor lessons to individual students and, in some cases, reduce workload. AI can also support students with additional learning needs, providing adaptive resources to ensure inclusivity.
However, there are concerns around over-reliance on AI, with some educators worried about the potential loss of human interaction in learning. Questions around data privacy and the ethical use of AI in education are also being debated, with calls for clear guidelines to ensure technology enhances, rather than replaces, traditional teaching methods.
Integration of CENTURY Tech in teacher training
We have integrated CENTURY Tech into our teacher training to enhance the assessment and support we provide to trainees. This AI-powered platform allows us to develop trainees’ confidence in English and maths while ensuring rigorous and personalised learning. Trainees begin by completing diagnostic assessments on CENTURY, which provide clear insights into their academic strengths and areas for development.
The platform’s AI then generates a tailored programme of learning modules, helping each trainee build subject knowledge efficiently. This approach not only strengthens trainees’ understanding but also provides them with high-quality resources they can use in their teaching practice, reducing the need for extensive external research.
Looking ahead
As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we acknowledge that the journey of innovation in education is ongoing. Our commitment to integrating technology into our training programmes ensures that our trainees are well-prepared to adapt and thrive in ever-evolving classroom environments.
By embracing both technological advancements and proven pedagogical practices, we continue to inspire and equip the next generation of teachers to lead with innovation and empathy.
