Festive round-up: Celebrating team building and wellbeing in teacher training
As the Christmas break approaches, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the incredible experiences our trainee teachers have had in their first term on the programme.
From exciting team-building activities to an inspiring wellbeing conference, our trainees have had countless opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. These events not only equip our future teachers with valuable skills but also strengthen their sense of community and purpose.
Building connections through team-building days
As the year draws to a close, we’re looking back on the team-building experiences organised by our teacher training hubs. These events were designed to encourage collaboration, resilience, and problem-solving skills – essential attributes for the classroom.
Our Leicestershire Secondary cohort embraced the great outdoors at Sibbertoft Airfield, learning vital survival skills such as fire lighting, shelter construction, and team challenges under the guidance of former military survivalists. Meanwhile, our Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Primary trainees enjoyed a two-day residential packed with exploration, including visits to Crich Tramway Museum and a stunning sunrise walk at Carsington Water.
At The Mill Adventure Base, our Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Secondary cohort bonded over canoeing, climbing, and teamwork-focused activities, creating lasting memories while building their confidence. Finally, our Leicestershire Primary trainees were inspired at Twycross Zoo and Danemill Primary School, discovering innovative ways to integrate the natural environment into their teaching. Across all hubs, these activities have helped trainees build strong connections and embrace the teamwork mindset that is vital for success in the classroom.
Supporting wellbeing: Insights from our conference
Alongside developing teamwork, we continue to place a strong emphasis on the importance of wellbeing. Our wellbeing conference this term provided our trainees with valuable tools and insights for looking after their mental and emotional health as they embark on their teaching journey.
Adam Brett, Lecturer and Researcher at University of Derby, reminded attendees of the power of belonging and community within education, emphasising the need for teachers to feel connected. Programme Director, Dirk Smith, led a practical resilience workshop, equipping trainees with strategies to handle challenges, while alumni speaker Naimh offered an inspiring and honest reflection on her experiences as a newly qualified teacher. By sharing her journey, she highlighted the importance of self-care and perseverance. The conference was a timely reminder that wellbeing is as essential as pedagogy in building a successful teaching career.
Relaxing and recharging over the Christmas break
As we approach the end of term, it’s important our trainees take time to relax, recharge, and reflect. The Christmas break offers the perfect opportunity for trainees to focus on self-care and return energised for the new term. Here are some tips for trainee and qualified teachers to make the most of the break:
Switch off and unwind: Step away from emails and lesson planning where you can to give yourself a proper mental break.
Catch up on rest: Prioritise sleep and relaxation to help restore your energy levels.
Enjoy your passions: Whether it’s reading, baking, or spending time with family and friends, indulge in the activities you love most.
Set thoughtful goals: Use the quieter moments to reflect on your progress and set realistic goals for the next stage of your teaching journey.
Stay active: Simply getting outdoors can help you feel refreshed and balanced, so why not head out on a walk with a loved one during the break.
As you enjoy this festive season, remember that looking after yourself is the best way to prepare for the challenges and rewards of the months ahead. We wish all our trainees a peaceful, joyful, and well-deserved Christmas break!
