Case Study

Secondary Alumni Spotlight: Carrie

In this case study, Carrie shares her journey of training to become a Languages teacher, specialising in German and Spanish, while balancing family life as a parent. Her story demonstrates how dedication, planning, and support can help trainees thrive both professionally and personally.

I had always considered becoming a teacher, but there were always logistical reasons why the timing didn’t quite work to start teacher training. However, once my children had started school and my husband had finished his apprenticeship, the timing was perfect for me to take the leap. I have always enjoyed helping people, and having my own children made me realise how much I liked teaching others.

As I began teacher training to become a Languages teacher (Spanish and German) and as a parent, I found the Inspiring Leaders Teaching Training team to be incredibly supportive. Everything was well organised, and everyone was always happy to help. The course requirements were always clear and provided well in advance, which allowed me to get ahead on tasks – helpful when the kids inevitably ended up sick.

I really enjoyed the training days throughout the year. It was lovely to see everyone, and I have always enjoyed the academic side of things. Getting to know my own classes in school was also a highlight; after six months with the same class, I knew them well, which isn’t something you get on short placements.

In terms of challenges, I realised that there is a lot to do, but as long as you are organised and plan ahead, it is achievable. Balancing everything with raising a family was, of course, difficult. However, making the most of free periods, breaks, and lunchtimes helped me stay on top of things. For example, I would go to training sessions early to work on coursework, leaving more free time when I was home with the kids. Doing coursework as you go along is essential; otherwise, it would be impossible to catch up while juggling home life.

I am now in my first year teaching as an ECT, and I’m loving it. Completing a school-centred initial teacher training course really helped prepare me, as I had a much better understanding of overall school responsibilities than I would have if I had only done short placements.

The one piece of advice I would give to future trainees is to keep on top of coursework – don’t leave it until the last minute!
